This article explains the LNAT exam in a simple way and offers answers to common questions.

The information provided here is from 2024 and is relevant to the 2024–2025 LNAT testing cycle.

Always validate all information against the official sources – such as the LNAT website, the UCAS website and the University websites.

Taking the LNAT

The LNAT can’t be taken before summer vacation. It must be taken during the same year as your UCAS application, starting on September 1st each year, unless it falls on a weekend. You can take the LNAT before or after submitting your UCAS application, as long as it’s within the same year. Your LNAT score will be available after you apply for university.

If you took the LNAT the previous year, your score won’t count this year. You must take the test again if you’re applying to a university that needs it. If you don’t take the LNAT in time and apply to a university that requires it, your application will be denied. You’ll have to apply next year and take the LNAT before the deadline.

If you’re taking a gap year and traveling or working abroad when the LNAT starts, you still need to take the test. There are 500 test centers around the world where you can take it.

LNAT Universities

Currently, nine UK universities need the LNAT as part of their undergraduate Law program admissions process. The LNAT helps them choose between applicants with similar grades and decide if they are suitable for studying law.

  • Durham University
  • King’s College London
  • LSE – London School of Economics and Political Science
  • SOAS
  • University College London
  • University of Bristol
  • University of Cambridge
  • University of Glasgow
  • University of Oxford

The LNAT Exam

With a decent amount of practice, the LNAT is not a difficult exam to ace.

Section A has 42 comprehension based multiple-choice questions.

Section B has three essay questions, of which you must answer one essay question in around 500 – 600 words. (Max length is 750 words.)

The whole exam lasts for 2 hours and 15 minutes, with 95 minutes for Section A – multiple-choice questions and 40 minutes for the Section B – essay question.

LNAT Multiple-Choice Questions

The first part of the LNAT, the comprehension based MCQ Section A is computer-graded.

You’ll read 12 passages on a variety of general topics and answer three or four questions about each passage. (6 passages x 3 MCQs + 6 passages x 4 MCQs = 42 MCQs)

The questions assess your ability to understand meanings from the text, not your knowledge of specific topics.

The passages are generic in nature; and all answers are available within the passage itself – making the LNAT a subject agnostic test.

LNAT Essay

You’ll pick one of three essay questions about general topics related to current issues. Check our other articles for more info on LNAT essay questions and how to tackle them.

We have included 90 essay prompts (essay questions) in our LNAT Practice Tests for adequate practice.

LNAT Scoring

The test doesn’t have a pass or fail mark. It’s scored out of 42, and average scores usually result in successful offers from LNAT universities. Universities see your score before you do.

LNAT scores come out in two batches throughout the year. If you take the test before January 20th, you’ll get your results in mid-February. If you take the test after January 20th, you’ll get your results in mid-August.

Your LNAT score is only good for the year you took it. If you’re reapplying, you must retake the test during the current application cycle. Your score won’t be carried over from one year to the next.

LNAT Retakes

You can only take the LNAT once during the application year, which goes from September 1st to July 31st.

If you want to try again, you’ll need to wait for the next application cycle and reapply.

In case of multiple LNAT attempts, only your first attempt scores may be considered.

Extra Time for the LNAT

If you require additional time for the LNAT, register as usual online through Pearson VUE but don’t book your test online. Fill out an Examination Access Requirements form on the website and send it to them, along with any necessary documentation.
