If you are applying for 2025 entry (or deferred entry in 2026) to any of the universities listed below in this article, you need to take the LNAT during the September 2024 to January 2025 test cycle.

The LNAT is a mandatory part of the undergraduate Law programmes admissions processes in these universities.

In this article, we will get a brief understanding of how these universities use your LNAT scores.

You must also read the information about deadline dates for the universities in a separate article in this series; or check the official sources (LNAT website, UCAS and University websites) for up to date information.

As well as taking the LNAT, you need to apply for your chosen programmes in the normal way, through the UCAS.

Merely sitting for the LNAT does not mean an application to any of these universities.

In 2024, nine universities in the UK require the LNAT test, for 2025 entry.

  • Durham University
  • King’s College, London (KCL)
  • London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)
  • University College London (UCL)
  • University of Bristol
  • University of Cambridge
  • University of Glasgow
  • University of Oxford
  • SOAS University of London

How many times can you sit for the LNAT in 2024 or 2025?

You can sit for the LNAT only once in every LNAT cycle. In other words, in every UCAS admission cycle, you can sit for the LNAT only once.

If you sit twice, the scores for your most recent attempt in the cycle will not be considered. Only scores from your first attempt are considered.

LNAT scores are valid for the specific cycle only. They are not carried forward to the next cycle.

How do universities use your LNAT score

Different universities use your LNAT scores in different ways.

Some universities share how they use LNAT scores. For example,

  • For the University of Bristol, LNAT gets a 40% weightage in your application. (60% multiple-choice questions and 40% essay)
  • UCL sets a benchmark ‘cut off’ LNAT score for the year, based on previous years’ scores
  • LSE only considers the multiple-choice questions. The essay is not considered.
  • For Cambridge University, the essays are marked centrally
  • Oxford University uses a ‘comparative marking system’
  • University of Glasgow will normally use the only the Section A MCQ scores, the essay is read only in some cases
  • For KCL, the LNAT essay is not used in the admissions process

Read our university specific articles to understand the historic LNAT scores, such as the minimum and average scores of shortlisted candidates.

Other universities may not specifically share details on how they use the LNAT scores, but they definitely do consider the LNAT as a crucial part of your overall application.
