Let us take a look at how the London School of Economics – LSE will use LNAT for their LLB admissions for 2025 and 2026

LSE is a highly competitive institution – featuring among the top Law Colleges and Universities, not only in the UK, but in various global rankings as well.

Typically, LSE receives 2500-2700 applications every year for the LLB in Laws program. 350-450 offers are made, resulting in 179 – 192 registrations.

For the 2022 admissions year, the stats for LLB in Laws were as follows:

  • Applications received : 2701
  • Offers made : 353

All applicants for the LLB (course code M100) at LSE for entry in 2025 (or deferred entry in 2026) are required to sit the Law National Admissions Test (LNAT).

The LNAT is currently not required for any other programme at LSE.

Why does LSE use the LNAT scores for admissions?

In every admission cycle, LSE receives a very high volume of highly-qualified applicants to study the LLB. The applicants to admit ratio is typically around 14 : 1.

Apart from the regular academic parameters, the LNAT provides additional information about applicants’ aptitude for the study of law. The LNAT is designed to test the candidate’s reasoning abilities and comprehension skills, which are essential for the study of law.

In addition to the LNAT scores, LSE takes into account the full range of information available on the UCAS form, including:

  • the Personal Statement,
  • academic achievements (both achieved and predicted grades),
  • subject combinations,
  • contextual information,
  • the UCAS reference.

Does LSE use the LNAT Essay for applicant evaluation?

No. As per the official information on the LSE website, LSE only uses the multiple-choice score (Section A) of the LNAT in its assessment of applicants. The LNAT essay is not considered for most applicants.

However, if you are an applicant with a non-traditional educational background, and you would have otherwise been identified as having to sit for the Undergraduate Admissions Assessment (UGAA), the LSE evaluators may consider your LNAT essay.

To clarify on the previous point – Applicants with non-traditional educational background, applying for LLB Laws (M100) will not be asked to sit the LSE UGAA. Instead, the LNAT essay may be considered by the selectors.

When should you take the LNAT for LSE LLB admissions?

All applicants for LSE LLB programme (M100) must sit the Law National Admissions Test (LNAT) in the relevant admissions cycle. LNAT scores are not carried forward to the next year.

For entry in September 2025 (or deferred entry in September 2026) the LNAT can be taken between 1 September 2024 and 31 December 2024.

You may submit your application to LSE LLB through UCAS even before you take the LNAT, however it is preferable to take the LNAT at the earliest. In any case, you will have to take the test by 31 December 2024 to be eligible for an offer.

Important! – Ensure that you select LSE when you register your LNAT account (while registering for the LNAT). This will enable LSE to retrieve your LNAT scores for their evaluation process.

What is the minimum LNAT score for LSE LLB admission offers?

As such, LSE does not mention any minimum LNAT score as an eligibility criteria.

The average section ‘A’ Multiple Choice Questions LNAT score of LSE LLB programme offer-holders for the recent application cycles was :

  • 26 for 2019,
  • 26 for 2020,
  • 25 for 2021,
  • 25.52 for 2022 (Round it up to 26)

The average scores from previous years are quite misleading since the calculations will include candidates with lower LNAT scores, but having higher academic performance or scoring higher in other parameters. These averages may also include candidates who qualified for contextual admissions.

To summarize and to put it more simply, the LNAT is a very critical factor in the LSE LLB admissions. It may have up to 40% weightage in the admissions criteria. Therefore, the higher your score, the better.

In trying to determine your likelihood of securing a spot, keep in mind that this question cannot be addressed solely through past data. The overall numbers of applicants, their LNAT scores and other academic achievements will change from year-to year.

Each application will be evaluated on its unique merits, taking a comprehensive look at the supporting materials within the context of the current year’s applicant pool.

Statistics from prior years will not definitively answer the question “will I get an offer?”. Just prepare well, give the LNAT your best shot and submit your application.
