We analysed the MCQ scores of our LNAT Practice Test users and we found a curious issue that was sometimes reducing their scores.

They were missing out on crucial marks because they ignored the ‘Most Important Rule for LNAT’. The reason some of their answers were getting marked as ‘wrong’, was because they were right!

Sounds confusing? Let me explain.

A simple example

Consider this passage and the question that follows.

Passage: “The prime minister of the United Kingdom is the head of government of the United Kingdom. The prime minister advises the sovereign on the exercise of much of the royal prerogative, chairs the Cabinet and selects its ministers. As modern prime ministers hold office by virtue of their ability to command the confidence of the House of Commons, they sit as members of Parliament. Winston Churchill is arguably the most famous person to hold this office till date.”

Question: Who among the following has not held the office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom?

  • Theresa May
  • John Major
  • Kwasi Kwarteng
  • Margaret Thatcher
  • Cannot be answered.

If you use your general awareness, the correct answer you will choose is ‘Kwasi Kwarteng’. Which is factually correct.

But in the context of the LNAT, that answer is wrong!

The correct answer for this question will be ‘Cannot be answered.’

The most important rule for LNAT

The basic and the most important rule to remember when you are taking the LNAT is:

DO NOT use any general awareness or external knowledge while answering the LNAT section A questions.

No external knowledge of any specific topic is required, expected in the LNAT.

All questions in section A must be answered strictly on the basis of what is stated, implied or can be inferred from within the given passage.

Given that candidates from different backgrounds take this test, the LNAT is designed to ensure that no candidate has any extra advantage.

How to practice for the LNAT

Attempting as many practice tests as possible is the best way to prepare for the LNAT.

Normally, all candidates will instinctively use their general knowledge while answering questions.

Therefore, it is essential to practice consciously ignoring any information that is not given within the passage. If the passage insists that ‘the Earth is flat’ is a correct statement, answer the questions on that basis alone.

Factually correct answers may be included in the answer options to confuse the test takers. Practice ignoring them.

Rather than following the normal rule of ‘sticking to the facts’, when it comes to the LNAT, ‘stick with the passage’ is the correct approach.
