What is the difference between ‘Facts’ and ‘Opinions’?

Facts

A ‘Fact’ is a statement that can be objectively verified or proven true. Facts are based on evidence.

Examples of Facts

  • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level.
  • The Earth revolves around the Sun.
  • Elephants are the largest land mammals.
  • Paris is the capital of France.
  • There are 24 hours in a day.

Opinions

An ‘Opinion’ is a personal belief or judgment that cannot be proven true or false. Opinions are based on an individual’s feelings, beliefs, or perspectives.

Examples of Opinions

  • Chocolate ice cream is the best flavor.
  • The Mona Lisa is the most beautiful painting.
  • Cats make better pets than dogs.
  • Winter is the most enjoyable season.
  • Reading is more relaxing than watching TV.

To differentiate between ‘Fact’ and ‘Opinion’, consider whether the statement can be proven true or false using evidence. If it can, it’s a fact. If it’s a personal belief that cannot be proven or disproven, it’s an opinion.
